About Yamadera

♦Tranquil and beautiful temple loved by Basyo Matsuo, the haiku poet.
One of Matsuo Basyo's most popular haiku was written here. About 1100 years ago, Rissyaku temple was constructed by Enin, or Zikaku Daihi nowadays called Yamadera.
Going up 1050 steps of stone stair is not that easy, yet in its half way, there is Semizuka where Basyo's haiku is carved and its sacred atomosphere is worth visiting.
